Jackie Mayorga is a great example of how scholarship gifts transform lives.
The first in her family to go to college, she arrived on campus from Keizer, Oregon, planning to study marine biology. Instead, she’s completed majors in sociology and international relations, and will wrap up a third in Spanish this term.
Her plans changed when she took a 100-level international relations course “just to satisfy requirements” and loved it. When an advisor showed her it was possible to pursue three majors, Jackie rose to the challenge.
At one point, however, she thought she wouldn’t make it. “My advisors helped me move past that,” she says. “I’m grateful.”
Now she has an internship helping immigrants start businesses. Her long-range plan is to work in international development after grad school.
“I could not have come here without my scholarship,” she says.
