Charitable gift annuities

You can support the University of Oregon while locking in lifetime payments by making a gift to fund a charitable gift annuity.

How do they work?

You transfer cash or other assets to the UO Foundation. In return, you receive payments for the rest of your life. The amount is determined by your age at the time you make your gift.

You will also qualify for an immediate income tax charitable deduction. What’s more, a portion of your payments will receive preferential tax treatment as tax-free income or long-term capital gains.

After your lifetime, the remaining balance will go to the area on campus that you choose to support.

What kind of assets may I use?

1) Cash

Charitable gift annuities are an attractive option if you like the security and fixed income and, at the same time, want to support a charitable institution such as the University of Oregon.

Like CDs, charitable gift annuities offer fixed income payments. For contributions of cash, a large part of each payment you receive will be treated as a tax-free distribution.

2) Appreciated stock with low paying dividends

Do you have stock that is paying low dividends? Have you refrained from selling it because you do not want capital gains taxes to take a bite out of your profits?

Contributing appreciated stock into a charitable gift annuity will not cause you to incur any immediate capital gains taxes. Even better, your payments will be based on the stock’s full fair market value.
