Charitable Remainder Unitrusts

A gift that provides the giver with tax advantages and an income stream for life

You may be able to make a bigger gift to support the UO than you thought possible by establishing a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT).

A CRUT might work for you if you want to support the UO and

  • would like to receive income for life
  • own appreciated assets that would trigger a substantial capital gains tax
  • can use an income tax charitable deduction

How it works

You irrevocably transfer assets to a CRUT, which pays you income for your lifetime or a term of years. Funds remaining in the trust when it ends will benefit the area at the UO that you choose.

The benefits are based on your age, the term of trust, and the amount and type of funding asset.

EXAMPLE
5% CRUT funded by a couple, both age 70, in May 2017
Gift $100,000 cash
Income tax deduction $41,166
Income (year one) $5,000
