Building Confidence and Experience

Headshot - Jose-10

This summer Jose Carrillo, a senior advertising major in the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC), interned for Pivot Group, an advertising agency in Portland focused on nonprofit work.

Carrillo served as a copywriter, met regularly with clients, and worked closely with Pivot’s art director on styles and design layouts. He said his SOJC professors and coursework prepared him well for strategic agency work, and the internship gave him confidence, experience, and portfolio pieces to help him land a job in advertising after graduation.

“Being able to get practice with an actual client and team members, I feel more confident in myself,” Carrillo said. “I had a lot of work to do independently right off the bat, which helped get me into the flow of things and allowed me to fail, something that’s honestly encouraged.” Thanks to Carrillo’s stipend from the donor-funded SOJC Internship Support Fund he could focus on his work and travel to Pivot’s Portland office to collaborate with the team in person.
