Mystery Solved!

emucokemachine-520x304

Once again our diligent readers have shed some light on another mystery photo from the UO Archives. This is the shoe rental counter in the basement of the EMU circa 1950.

Lorna Larson ’52 is being handed a pair of bowling shoes by Lou Bellisimo, the UO bowling coach from 1949-1972 and recreation manager when this photo was taken. Sam Fidman ’51 leans against the Coke machine holding his 5 cent bottle of soda.

One reader tentatively identified Ken Metzler ’51 at the far left holding a ping pong paddle in one hand and a soda in the other. If anyone can verify or refute this please let us know.

Things have really changed since the 1950s. Sam Sorensen ’56 wrote to tell us that he was on the bowling team and recalls working at that same rec desk and getting paid 85 cents per hour. Another UO alumnus let us know that by 1960 the Cokes at the rec center had gone up to 10 cents.
