Two readers confirmed this photo was taken in September 1950.

Juergen Voigts ’54 (upper right corner) wrote: “I was a freshman and was observing everything new at college. I remember that a cup of coffee was six cents; seven cents with cream, so most everyone drank black coffee.”

Georgene Shanklin Gmahling ’51 (fourth from right in the photograph) concurs, although she remembers drinking soda rather than black coffee. “We were all excited to have the EMU open,” she recalls. Gmahling and her husband, George, stopped by the EMU for lunch in July 2011. She was amused to see all the students on cell phones. Otherwise, she says, “I was surprised by how similar it looked. The grounds looked so beautiful.”
