Mystery Photo W2023

Winter 2023 FOCUS mystery solved!

Our mystery photo was identified by Sandy Brayton Blackman, ’72, and several other Pi Phi sorority members. This photo is of Fall Rush in 1970; Pi Phi members are running to greet the new girls who were just accepted as new pledges into the Pi Beta Phi sorority. This greeting was a tradition, one that the men of the Phi Delt house across the street would enjoy watching as they sat on a long bench at the end of their porch.

In the street running are current Pi Phi members with maiden last names (from right to left): Shira Wright, Gidge Benson and Charlie Colson (in the striped coat). To the left with coats on walking in the street are Shelly Dunker, Marcia Maxwell, and Connie Holmes (in the black coat).

On the hillside in front of the Pi Phi house are sorority sisters who lived in the house (from right to left): Sue Valliant, Debbie Stein, Trudi Francisco, Lori Schmidt, Loretta Hennessy, Debbie Smith, Barbie Coon, Jackie Evenson (President of the house), behind her Janet Clay, Shelly Bond, Dodo Skade, Leslie Perkins, and behind Leslie are Trish Thompson & Nancy Troth. The girl in the white sweater all the way to the left is Sally Wishart.

“Thanks so much for putting our ‘unknown picture’ on the cover of your FOCUS issue. All of us Pi Phi’s enjoyed trying to identify everyone in the picture after 50 years,” Sandy said. “We began to have 5-year reunions starting in 1977, every three years starting in the 1980s, and every year starting in the early 1990s. None of us expected that becoming a Pi Phi would be a lifelong experience!”

Many former members have continued to serve, including participation in the fundraiser to complete a major remodel to the house the Pi Phi’s have lived in since 1915.
